The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has officially named its 17-player squad for the Asia Cup 2025, appointing star leg-spinner Rashid Khan as captain. The team will commence its tournament journey in the opening match against Hong Kong on September 9, aiming to make a significant impact in the regional championship.
A key highlight of the selected squad is the formidable spin department, which has been significantly bolstered. The return of Mujeeb-ur-Rahman and Allah Ghazanfar, who both missed the recent ICC Champions Trophy, adds considerable depth. They join captain Rashid Khan and the veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi, making spin bowling Afghanistan’s primary weapon. The batting lineup sees Ibrahim Zadran retaining his place, while Hazratullah Zazai has been omitted. The middle order will be anchored by Darwish Rasooli and Sediqullah Atal, with wicketkeeping duties shared between Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Mohammad Ishaq.
The team’s balance is further enhanced by a strong group of all-rounders, including Mohammad Nabi, Azmatullah Omarzai, Karim Janat, and Gulbadin Naib. The pace attack will be led by the experienced Fazalhaq Farooqi, with Naveen-ul-Haq and Farid Ahmad Malik providing crucial support. The ACB has also designated Wafiullah Tarakhail, Nangyal Kharote, and Abdullah Ahmadzai as traveling reserves for the tournament.
The Asia Cup 2025 will feature eight teams divided into two groups. Afghanistan finds itself in Group B alongside Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Hong Kong. Group A consists of arch-rivals Pakistan, India, as well as the UAE and Oman, setting the stage for a highly competitive event.
