Sindh Government Abolishes Parking Fees on Karachi’s Public Roads

In a major policy shift, the Sindh government has issued an official notification eliminating parking fees on all public roads across Karachi. The order states that no government entity, including the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), is permitted to collect parking charges on city streets. Instead, fees will only be applicable in designated areas such as private plots, commercial plazas, or specially managed parking zones.

The notification warns that any individual or organization found illegally charging for roadside parking will face legal consequences. This decision follows an earlier move to remove parking fees from 46 roads under KMC control earlier this month. Authorities aim to ease the burden on citizens while maintaining order in public spaces.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab explained that the move was made in the public interest, as the KMC has achieved sufficient financial independence. He revealed that the corporation no longer relies on the Rs40-50 million previously generated from parking fees, as its bank balance now exceeds Rs2 billion.

Wahab further highlighted the KMC’s strong financial performance, noting a 300% revenue increase in recent months. The body reportedly earned a record Rs2.3 billion in just seven months, with 751 development projects currently underway. This financial strength has allowed the government to prioritize citizen convenience over parking-related revenue.
