Sindh Government Greenlights Electric and Double-Decker Buses for Karachi

The Sindh government has announced a major overhaul of Karachi’s public transport system, with plans to introduce electric and hybrid buses—alongside Pakistan’s first double-decker buses—in the coming months. Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon revealed the initiative, emphasizing the province’s commitment to fully transitioning to an EV-based transport network. The move aims to reduce emissions and modernize urban mobility in the megacity.

A pivotal transport department meeting, chaired by Memon, assessed the ongoing Red Line and Yellow Line BRT projects. Attendees included Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, Sindh Mass Transit Authority MD Kamal Dayo, and project consultants. Officials confirmed that the Red Line is on schedule, while construction on the Yellow Line has been accelerated. Memon directed teams to strictly maintain quality standards and meet deadlines, calling these projects “revolutionary for Karachi’s commuters.”

Memon stressed that the BRT systems will provide affordable, safe, and high-quality travel, aligning with PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s vision for public welfare. “We want Karachi’s people to enjoy global-standard transport facilities,” he stated, adding that the government is leveraging cutting-edge solutions to ease the city’s chronic transit woes.

The introduction of EV and hybrid buses marks a significant step toward sustainable urban transport in Pakistan. With double-deckers set to debut, Karachi’s streets are poised for a transformative upgrade. As projects advance, the Sindh government reaffirms its pledge to deliver timely, corruption-free implementations—promising a brighter, greener future for the city’s millions of daily riders.
