Sindh Government, Transporters Strike Deal After Violent Protests

The Sindh government and transporters have reached an agreement following intense negotiations, resulting in the transporters calling off their protest. The breakthrough came during a meeting at Commissioner House Karachi between Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon and a transporters’ delegation led by Haji Yousuf and Jam Alam. Also present were Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi, Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, Karachi Police Chief Javed Alam Odho, and other officials.

During the discussions, Memon expressed profound grief over recent fatalities in transport-related accidents and strongly condemned the violent incidents that followed. “The loss of human life is irreparable and deeply saddening for us,” he stated. The minister emphasized that violence and vandalism are not solutions to problems, pledging to work with all stakeholders to resolve transport sector issues amicably.

Memon assured transporters that their legitimate concerns would be addressed on priority basis. The government announced plans to form a committee to assess and compensate for damages incurred during the protests. Additionally, new safety measures will be implemented, including mandatory installation of cameras and trackers in dumpers, proper insurance coverage, and verification of drivers’ licenses.

The minister warned that those who took the law into their own hands and instigated riots would face cases under anti-terrorism laws. “We will ensure such incidents don’t recur in future,” Memon asserted. The agreement marks a significant step towards restoring normalcy in Karachi’s transport operations while addressing the grievances of all parties involved.
