The Sindh government has initiated large-scale rescue and relief operations across Karachi in response to the emergency situation caused by recent heavy rains. Senior Provincial Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon stated that these operations are being conducted in close coordination with multiple institutions, including the Pakistan Army, Rescue 1122, PDMA, Sindh Police, and other agencies. He credited the timely strategy of the Sindh government and inter-institutional cooperation for keeping citizens safe during the crisis.
The minister detailed that heavy rainfall resulted in significant waterlogging in low-lying areas, particularly affecting residential communities. District administration immediately deployed 16 operational teams, while joint relief activities were launched by the Pakistan Army, Rescue 1122, and police. A critical situation developed on the M-9 Motorway where water from Lath Dam trapped several vehicles, leading to the successful rescue of 172 people and 23 vehicles through coordinated efforts.
Significant evacuation operations were conducted in multiple flood-affected areas. Approximately 230-250 residents from submerged houses in Muhammadi Colony (Machhar Colony) were moved to local mosques, madrasas, and homes. Additional rescues were carried out in Korangi Nala, Saadi Town, Saima Society, Nishtar Basti, Essa Nagri, and Laasi Goth with participation from the Pakistan Navy, which helped transport citizens to safety.
Minister Memon reported that 16 teams of Rescue 1122 and PDMA, comprising 380 personnel, remained active throughout the night, evacuating over 400 people from various areas including Sohrab Goth, Laasi Goth, Gadap, and Machhar Colony. He noted that no major loss of life has been reported in Karachi so far, with one citizen deceased in an unfortunate accident. The Sindh government is now focused on both immediate rehabilitation efforts and finding permanent solutions for the affected areas, with drainage operations ongoing by KMC, Water Board, PDMA, and Pakistan Army engineers.
