Sindh Govt to Demolish Dangerous Buildings in Karachi, Commissioner Assigned Survey

Sindh Provincial Minister Saeed Ghani has vowed to take the strictest action against those found responsible for the Lyari building collapse that killed 27 people. Addressing a press conference with ministers Sharjeel Memon and Zia ul Hassan Lanjar, Ghani confirmed the suspension of the Director General of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA). He emphasized that all individuals involved in the negligence that led to this tragedy will be held accountable.

The government will begin demolishing 51 dilapidated buildings soon, according to Ghani. He also announced compensation of Rs. 1 million for each bereaved family. The committee investigating the incident will submit its report within two days, and strict disciplinary action is expected against any official found negligent.

Sharjeel Memon further disclosed that the officer responsible for the area was suspended on the same day of the incident, and the DG SBCA has now been officially removed. In addition, the officers deployed in the Lyari zone have also been suspended. The government is investigating which officials were responsible for ignoring a warning issued back in 2002, when the building was first declared dangerous.

The Commissioner of Karachi has been tasked with surveying the 51 most dangerous buildings in the city. Ghani also revealed that legal reforms are underway, with two weeks given to propose amendments to the SBCA law to strengthen oversight. The ministers reiterated their shared grief with the affected families and pledged decisive action to prevent similar disasters.
