Toyota Shifts GR Corolla Production to Britain for Faster US Deliveries

Toyota is shifting some production of its GR Corolla sports car from Japan to Britain, investing around $56 million in a dedicated line at the Burnaston plant in Derbyshire. This move aims to utilize excess capacity in Britain and reduce delivery wait times for the North American market. The plant will produce 10,000 cars annually for export to North America starting mid-2026.
The decision to move production is not a response to US President Donald Trump’s tariffs on automobile imports but rather a strategic move to optimize production. Britain’s excess capacity will help Toyota meet the high demand for the GR Corolla in North America, where the car has been well-received by engine enthusiasts.
The GR Corolla is a popular model, with Toyota selling 3,927 units in the US during the 2023 model year. The company has been struggling to keep up with demand, and this move is expected to help alleviate some of the pressure. The Burnaston plant has a significant history with Toyota, having produced over 5 million cars since its establishment in 1992, including the recent milestone of producing its 5 millionth car, a Corolla GR Sport Hatchback hybrid.
The investment in the Burnaston plant is part of Toyota’s broader strategy to optimize its production and meet growing demand for its vehicles. The plant has undergone significant investments, including over €3.25 billion since 1989, and has become a key player in Toyota’s European manufacturing network. With this move, Toyota aims to further solidify its presence in Britain and improve its supply chain efficiency
