UAE’s Asif Khan Reflects on Near-Upset Against Pakistan in T20 Clash

Despite a 31-run loss to Pakistan in the T20I tri-series, UAE’s middle-order batter Asif Khan believed his team’s inexperience was the deciding factor, stating that “small mistakes” cost them a potential upset victory. Khan, who was born in Pakistan and once represented Lahore in domestic cricket, played a blistering knock of 77 runs off just 35 balls that kept the hosts firmly in the contest while chasing a challenging target of 209.

Khan praised his captain, Muhammad Waseem, for providing early fireworks but acknowledged that his run-out was a significant setback for the team’s chase. He explained the team’s strategy was to preserve wickets and unleash a power-hitting assault in the final overs, a plan that showed promise but was ultimately thwarted by Pakistan’s disciplined bowling attack in the death overs.

Highlighting the Sharjah Cricket Stadium as a “home ground advantage” for the UAE, Khan emphasized that the team’s spirited performance against a cricketing giant has served as a major confidence booster ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup. “We gave the big teams a wake-up call,” he stated, noting that the tournament is crucial preparation and the close contest has given the squad belief in its capabilities.

Khan also pointed to the role of dew in Sharjah, which makes batting second easier, and identified disciplined bowling as the core strength of the UAE’s T20 squad. He expressed confidence that if his team can restrict opponents to a manageable total of 170-180 runs, they have a very real chance of winning against top-tier teams.
