Urgent Action Needed as Indus River Rises in Bakrani

Bakrani (Ghulam Nabi Halti ): Due to the continuous rise in the Indus River near Bakrani, pressure has increased on the Hakra and Nawanabad embankments. The Irrigation Department has deployed staff on alert to tackle the possible flood situation, stationed heavy machinery, established camps, and started stone pitching and repair work on the embankments. However, despite the looming threat of floods, the administrations of Larkana district and Bakrani taluka have made no proper arrangements nor set up any relief camps. Villagers whose homes are submerged are moving to safer places on a self-help basis.

According to the report, the continuous rise in the Indus River has increased pressure on the Hakra and Nawanabad embankments of Bakrani taluka. In response, the Irrigation Department has put its staff on alert, deployed heavy machinery, and established camps near the embankments. Additionally, stone pitching and repair work are underway to strengthen the dikes. On this occasion, the Executive Engineer (XEN) of the Larkana Irrigation Department, Athar Ali Dhamrah, said that special measures have been taken to deal with the possible flood. Camps and checkpoints have been established near the Hakra and Nawanabad embankments of Bakrani taluka where irrigation staff are monitoring the embankments day and night. Heavy machinery has been stationed, and stone pitching as well as repair work are also in progress. He said there is no alarming situation so far; however, once the water reaches the Sukkur Barrage, the situation will become clearer.

Meanwhile, due to the continuous rise of the Indus River, many villages in the katcha (riverine) area of Bakrani taluka — including Ali Murad Jatoi, Bajehi Jatoi, Muhammad Buriro, Laik Buriro, Muhammad Musa Buriro, Jan Muhammad Memon, Jawan Buriro, and Channesar Jatoi, among others — have been inundated, leaving villagers in a state of fear. Residents of the katcha area are moving to safer places on their own. On the other hand, despite the threat of flooding, neither the district administration of Larkana nor the Bakrani taluka administration has taken adequate measures, established relief camps, or issued warnings for pre-emptive evacuation to safe areas.

In this regard, villagers of the katcha area said that due to the rise of the Indus River, their homes and crops have gone underwater, while the administrations of Larkana district and Bakrani taluka have taken no concrete steps and have not even taken notice of the situation. “We are migrating to safer areas on our own. With our villages submerged, different diseases have emerged, yet the villagers remain deprived of healthcare facilities.”
